Town with 6,200 inhabitants 20 km north of Debrecen. Settlement from Árpád's age. It was first mentioned in documents in 1332. During the war of independece led by Ferenc Rákóczi II. it belonged to the ten most important 'hajdú' towns, it kept its rank of market town for a long time. In the first half of the 19th century the Dégenfeld mansion was the home of lively intellectual life. Ferenc Kazinczy, Ferenc Kölcsey, Mihály Csokonai Vitéz, then István Széchenyi frequently visited this place, There are special trees in the English garden and park around the mansion. The building and the park are listed, part of the nature conservation area. The Calvinist church was built on former bases, it got its present form in 1768.
