Town with 2,460 inhabitants in the valley of the river Hernád, at the foot of the Zemplén Mountains. Seat of county Abauj until 1647. Famous product is the "barrel of Gönc" (136 litres), the wines of Tokaj were seasoned in such barrels. The 14th century Roman Catholic church was reconstructed in Baroque style. Gáspár Károlyi, who first translated the Bible into Hungarian, lies here, near the church, in an unknown place. On Dobogó Hill the Gothic ruins of the church of the Paulite monastery, founded in 1371 by King Lajos the Great, can be seen. On Nagy-Amadé Hill the ruins of the Amadé castle can be visited. There is a well of medicinal water in the northern part of the town.
