Village with 1,125 inhabitants on the northern shore of Little Balaton. Through the excavations the 9th century fortress of Pribina, Prince of the Slavs was found. This was also the site of the Saint Adrian Benedictine Abbey, founded by King Saint Stephen in 10l9. From the 11th century Zalavár became the centre of the county. North of the abbey a parish church was built for the converts, in the place of which a chapel was erected in honour of St. Stephen. In the next few years one of the important aims of archaeologists is to find and excavate the buildings rebuilt several times from the 9th to the end of the 17th century.
