The village was mentioend in records under the name Szentiván in 1371 and Zala-Szent-Iván in 1882. Its church was dedicated to St. John the Baptist and it still bears the name of the saint. Zala in the name of the village refers to the name of the county. It is near Zalaegerszeg, a railway junction, it has 977 inhabitants.
