It is one of the few settlements in county Baranya where the population is growing. Today it has 730 inhabitants. This village in the south-east of Baranya was inhabited as early as the Iron age according to the archaeological findings. Although it has relics from the Celtic period and the Árpád age showing the continuity of the settlement, it was first mentioned in records only in 1333-34. The life of the village under the name Földvár was badly affected by the advancing of the Turks and by the battle of Mohács. A seven hectare national memorial park was established in memory of the battle of 26 August 1526, where artistic wooden headboards, an ornamental well, a deathbell commemorate the event, which determined the fate of the nation. It became a village in 1984. |
