Village with 8,000 inhabitants 18 km west of Esztergom on the bank of the river Danube. The Roman Catholic church of 1770 was built in Baroque style. There was a Roman military camp called Crumerum on Sánc Hill, the stones of which were used to build a fortress during the War of Independence led by Prince Rákóczi. On the wall of the parish you can see a Roman stone tablet placed there in honour of emperor Septimius Severus in the 3rd century. The oldest stone cross of the town was erected in the main street, next to the Kernstok villa in 1848. The Statue of the Holy Trinity can be seen in the new public cemetery where you can also find a wooden headboard commemorating the heroes of the revolution of 1956. In the Kernstok Gallery run by the local council you can see a permanent exhibition of paintings by artists from Nyerges such as Károly Kernstok. Pictures of Nyergesújfalu |
