The village of nearly 2,700 inhabitants was first mentioned in records in 1251. In the course of its development it became the centre of 13 guilds by the end of the 1700s. It served as a district seat between 1816 and 1850. It is the most important settlement of the Baranya ridge, the economic, cultural, health care and educational micro-centre.
