in Kunmadaras:   Sight

It is situated in the east of county Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok, in the northern corner of the historical Great Cumania, near the Hortobágy. The village of 6,024 inhabitants is 16 km from Karcag. It can be reached on road No. 34, or by rail on the Karcag-Tiszafüred line. The village has been influenced by the characteristic features of the market towns of Great Cumania up to the present. The Calvinist religion has always been dominant here, this is shown by the large, fortress-like Calvinist church (Kálvin út 4.) built in the 18th century. A huge tower was attached to it, which has the characteristics of Baroque style, as the church was rebuilt in the 1860s. The chair, on which Lajos Kossuth was sitting when he was in Kunmadaras, is preserved here. In the east of the village, at 1 Bibó István street you can see a monument peasant house built at the end of the 18th century (Kossuth-house).
In the main square you can find the council house built in 1890 in eclectic style. The village is rich in natural beauties, as the puszta of Kunmadaras and the bog of Kunkápolnás are parts of the Hortobágy National Park. These are highly protected territories of the country. The puszta is genuinely untouched here with rich fauna and flora. The most beautiful and valuable territory of the region is the 3,000 ha bog of Kunkápolnás at the border of Kunmadaras. The bog can be visited only with the permission of the directorate of the Hortobágy National Park. The utilization of the former Soviet military airport can play an important role in the development of Kunmadaras.
