Hencse is situated at the border of Zselic and the sandy region of Inner Somogy, along the road connecting Kadarkút and Szigetvár. Arriving in the village the old mansion catches the visitors eyes first, which was worthily renewed by its present owner. The mansion was the home of the one-time owner of the neighbourhood, the Márffy family until the middle of the 20th century. Today the building and its park serve as a resort centre and a golf course, which is famous in Europe. The park is a nature protection area, where you can find the largest yew tree in Hungary, which is 400 years old. It was first mentioned in historical records in 1402 under the name Henche. From the 18th century the village was owned by the Erdődy, Czindery, Mérey and the Márffy families. According to a story from 1799, poet Mihály Csokonai Vitéz visited the village as well, while travelling in Somogy. The old Calvinist church is to be renewed soon, near which you can find a neoclassical mansion built between 1813 and 1815. In its park a golf centre was established by the present owner offering high standard tourism services. In the garden of the local council hall you can see a monument of the victims of World Wars I and II. The 19 names engraved in the stone are worthily preserved in the memory of the locals. |
