The settlement, which is situated 30 km west of Dunaföldvár, was named after its owner called Cece. It was first mentioned in documents in 1193 by Béla III. It was a nobleman's estate in the Middle Ages. In 1841 Petőfi visited the village as a strolling player, Gyula Illyés has family and emotional connections to the settlement. Between 1906 and 1950 it was famous for its pepper, now it is famous for its paprika and water melon. The Calvinist and the Catholic church were built in the 18th century in Baroque style. István Csók (1865-1961) was born in Sáregres. The Csók István memorial museum can be found in his parents' one-time house. Besides several paintings of the artist his easel and personal articles can be seen, too. The 19th century building of the Fisi family is now a House of Regional Traditions. |
