The village of Apaj (Apajpuszta) is situated at the gate of Kiskunság National Park, in the south of county Pest, 50 km from Budapest. It was first mentioned in records in the 1200s. After World War II. the State Farm of Kiskunság was established, the dynamic development of which contributed to the formation of the independent village of Apaj. It has a population of 1,288, with an average age of 32.
The Shepherd and Horse-riding Days held in the last week of July are famous in Europe, attracting several thousands visitors. The event presents the beauties of the Hungarian "puszta" (lowland plain), the indigenous animal species and the horse-herds' traditions to the visitors.
